How Does Ratio
Affect Shape?
All diamond shapes, except round, have ideal length-to-width ratios that emphasize their unique characteristics.
The Blue Nile
Signature Difference
If you’re looking for the best of the best, check out the Blue Nile Signature collection—our finest, most brilliant diamonds, cut to our exacting specifications.
In Summary
Shape refers to a diamond’s visual outline when viewed from above. Choosing a diamond shape is purely a reflection of personal style rather than criteria like the 4Cs.
Blue Nile carries 10 shapes, all of which have their own particular charm. Round-cut is the most popular shape, with princess a close second, however all fancy shapes are an excellent value, so you can often get a larger sized diamond while staying within your budget.
Keep in mind that while a J-colored diamond is an excellent value, non-round (or fancy shapes) may have slight color in its corners, which is nearly imperceptible to the human eye.

The round cut is a perennial favorite and loved for all 58 facets (57 if not counting the culet at the bottom) that provide its brilliance and sparkle. This shape is also available in our Blue Nile Signature collection.
Round
This popular choice is traditionally square, but brilliant like the round-cut and a stellar choice for engagement rings. This shape is also available in our Blue Nile Signature Collection.
Princess
Clarity, rather than brilliance, is key with this elegant rectangular shape so review the clarity plot on the diamond certificate to see where the inclusions lie. This shape is also available in our Blue Nile Signature Collection.
Emerald
Named after a family of Dutch diamond-cutters, this shape is a square emerald-cut, so be sure to view the clarity plot on the diamond certificate to see where the inclusions lie. This shape is also available in our Blue Nile Signature Collection.
Asscher
A marquise (say mahr-keez) diamond is shaped like a football and looks great accented with round or pear-shaped side stones or as a solitaire. Its elongated shape maximizes carat weight, giving the illusion of a much larger diamond.
Marquise
Developed in the 1960s, the bright and lively oval shape is basically an elongated round-cut. Like the marquise, it carries carat its weight well, giving the appearance of a larger diamond.
Oval
Brilliant like a princess, yet often rectangular like an emerald-cut, this versatile shape distinguishes itself with trimmed, or flat, corners and looks beautiful in a setting with baguette or round side diamonds.
Radiant
This brilliant-cut diamond is shaped like a teardrop, with a rounded end tapering into a single point. First developed in Belgium in 1453, the pear shape feature long triangular shaped facets and is an excellent alternative to a round-cut in a solitaire setting.
Pear
The ultimate symbol of love since the Middle Ages, a heart-cut is simply a pear-cut with a notch at its top. A bold and distinctive choice for an engagement ring, it works well with a variety of other jewelry styles, including pendants and earrings.
Heart
Cushion- or pillow-cut diamonds range in shape from square to rectangular, but what makes this cut unique are its rounded corners and larger facets, which increase brilliance and highlight clarity. This shape is also available in our Blue Nile Signature Collection.
